Thursday Live In Philly (3/30/17)

Emo has been making a bit of a comeback lately, with a lot of bands reuniting and emo parties cropping up throughout a bunch of cities (shout out to Philly’s emo nights, which were one of the first, if not the first… and Thursday vocalist Geoff was a guest DJ a few times), and while I was never a huge fan of the genre as a whole, I always loved Thursday.  Maybe it’s the fact I’m also originally from New Jersey and Thursday was always a staple for me growing up, but I always respected their political message and the fact they wrote songs that weren’t about getting dumped, unrequited love, or bleeding on dresses with gasping breaths or whatever.

This past Thursday (how fucking meta), I headed to Philadelphia’s Fillmore in order to catch the recently reunited band.  While I’ve seen Geoff play a solo show mostly doing Thursday songs and have seen his hardcore side project United Nations, I haven’t seen the full band of Thursday play in almost 15 years back in 2003 .

Thursday took the stage to a banner that read “Refugees Welcome Here” and kicked straight into their War All The Time intro track “For The Work Force, Drowning” to an enthusiastic crowd.  Sounding as tight as ever, the members legitimately seemed to be enjoying themselves on stage throughout the night, with Geoff all over the place as they ripped through a set consisting of songs mostly of Full Collapse and War All The Time with a couple from A City By The Light Divided and Common Existence thrown in.

One personal favorite moment was when they played my favorite “Jet Black New Year” and during the countdown had confetti cannons fire into the crowd.  An incredibly solid set, Thursday still kills it just as much as they did back when I saw them 14 years ago.
