This past Wednesday, I headed out to one of my favorite hole in the wall venues, Philly’s small dive bar The Fire in order to catch The Holy Mess. I got there right as they were setting up.
The Holy Mess:
The band actually took a while to set up due to gear issues (they informed us they dropped their amp and broke it… and proceeded to back out of a parking spot and hit a pole, so clearly they remain Philadelphia’s most shit showy band).
The band played a solid set to the small room, and even though dancing was kept at a minimum, plenty of us were singing along. Appropriately playing “Captain, We’re Drinking!” off their Dismount EP. With plenty of stage banter and joking around, The Holy Mess makes most of their shows feel like a basement show.
A solid (albeit short) set, The Holy Mess always puts on a fun show.
Captain We’re Drinking
I Think Corduroy Is Making A Come Back
I’ll admit, I don’t really listen to Captain, We’re Sinking very often but everyone I was with went mainly for them so I figure I check them out live. I have a few of their albums, and I don’t mind it when it comes on, but I haven’t really given it too much of a chance.
While it seemed like a lot of the older crowd left after locals The Holy Mess played, there were still plenty of people waiting around for the Scranton punks. With plenty of people shouting along, and a small pit breaking out Captain, We’re Sinking definitely played a fun set of their more emo influenced pop punk anthems.
