Saves The Day Live In Philly (12/22/13)

Holy crap, with the holidays and just remaining incredibly busy am I behind on posts here.  I’ve been to like 4 shows this week alone, and am just getting a chance to post.

Last Sunday, I headed to Philly’s First Unitarian Church to see the legendary Saves The Day (fuck you, they’re legendary if you’re originally from NJ too).  Seeing them in this no barricade, sold out, intimate environment was going to be awesome, except they were playing an acoustic show.  I wasn’t sure what to expect, as I don’t really do acoustic shows.  It’s not really appropriate to two-step… so I’m not a huge fan of acoustic… and top that off with the fact I really only know their first two albums and a B-Sides, I honestly wasn’t expecting too much.  Fuck, was I blown away.

After watching Walter Shreifels of Gorilla Biscuits and Civ play an acoustic set that included some covers (including Warzone’s “Don’t Forget The Struggle, Don’t Forget The Streets”, which is weird as shit acoustic), Saves The Day took the stage and immediately broke out into “Hold” off their acoustic EP and then straight into one of my favorites “Sell My Old Clothes, I’m Off To Heaven”.

I was pleasantly surprised by the sheer amount of energy in the room even though they were playing acoustic, as the drums still gave the songs enough of a driving edge still.  The band was plagued by some guitar issues throughout the night, busting two strings and taking a long time bantering while they were changing it, explaining that their guitar tech actually couldn’t make this show due to family obligations and that they were completely falling apart without him.

Yet, they powered on through their set playing a bunch of older songs, which kept me happy and shouting along near the front of the stage.  At one point, the band took a couple on stage, where the dude proposed to his girlfriend, which I feel happens at every Saves The Day show but kept the vibes positive regardless.

A solid and incredibly fun show, hopefully they do the smaller venue thing more (maybe electric next time?)
