If you’re a punk fan by any means, then you pretty much know that NYC’s punk band The Ramones were by far the most influential punk band to ever grace this planet and while proto-punk bands such as the New York Dolls and The Jam are the grandfathers and precursors of punk rock, The Ramones were certainly the fathers. Sadly, many people’s knowledge of the band ends somewhere between “That hey ho song” and “that one about wanting to be sedated or something.” I’m on a quest to change that.
The band’s discography is huge and quite honestly they definitely had a few subpar albums, but if you’re looking for a good starting point you can’t really go wrong with their 3rd release of Rocket To Russia. Picking up where they left off with their previous two, The Ramones crafted a 3 chord, minimalistic, fun masterpiece.
Kicking off the album with “Cretin Hop” the album is chock full of Ramones classics, including arguably one of the greatest punk songs ever written “Sheena Is A Punk Rocker.” Joey’s snarled vocals are melodic as ever, with Johnny shredding it on the guitar while Tommy and Dee Dee provide the driving force.
Some argue that Rocket To Russia is the greatest album the Ramones ever wrote… while I’m a bit partial to their Self Titled and give that one the edge, Rocket To Russia is certainly up there and definitely is worth your time. Ramones or GTFO.
