The Top 5 Most Overrated Bands

I’m feeling a bit cynical today, so I might as well get something off my chest. No matter where I go, I have to hear about how amazing the same damn 5 bands are. I’m sick of it I tell you, sick of it!

5. Sublime
The only band on this list I actually like, but they definitely do not deserve the amount of attention that they get. It seems like everybody and their grandmothers are obsessed with Sublime. Yes, they mixed reggae with punk in a pretty damn catchy way, but by no means did they influence ska or reggae (bands have been incorporating the two with punk for years). All we get from Sublime are a bunch of ultimate frisbee playing, long boarding, hemp wearing, shaggy haired frat bros talking about “how deep Brad Nowell was maaaaan”.

4. Jimi Hendrix
The king of putting people into comas. I don’t care how insane Hendrix was at the guitar. Skill does not equal good music, and long solos make for some pretty boring music.

3. Nirvana
If Kurt Cobain didn’t shoot himself, Nirvana would have eventually been completely forgotten about. So they helped kick off the grunge movement, which pretty much stood for the right to not shower and the right to wear the same Sonic Youth shirt for days.

2. Led Zeppelin
What the hell is so great about Led Zeppelin? Their only good song was “Dyer Maker”, everything else completely sucked (including your beloved “Stairway to Heaven”, it’s not even that good of a song, get over it.)

1. The Beatles
Jesus Christ I am sick of hearing about how great The Beatles were. They weren’t THAT good, and I’m going to go on a whim and say they weren’t even the best band of the 60s, let alone all time.

What about you? What’s your most overrated bands?

Ah but you’re forgetting the goofy covers available on all those overrated bands that we all know all the songs of! That is the best part in my opinion! For me, freakin Radiohead, I just never got it with them. This generation venerates them like gods in the way that my generation traipsed after another overrated monstrosity, the Grateful Dead. Speak of boring! What was that all about?? Right up there with Hendrix in my book.

a tart: Haha to be honest, i’m not familiar enough with radiohead or grateful dead to be critical of them. although you’re right, everyone seems obsessed with Radiohead.

Anon: I. don’t. really. think. I. said. anything. THAT. over. the. top. Actually. after. re-reading. the. post. I. don’t. even. think. I. said. anything. that. could. mildly. be. considered. offensive.

Either or, in the words of my main man foghorn leghorn: It’s a joke son, I said a joke (well, besides the fact I really do hate most of those bands).

You know, that’s funny, I actually considered Pink Floyd for this list. But then I decided if I don’t limit it to 5, I seriously could go on forever…

So yes, Pink Floyd definitely gets runner up. God damn experimental crap.

  6. Eric says:

Very controversial. Pink Floyd = overrated. But by far the most overrated band ever has got to be The Greatful Dead. Horrendous band.

The Beatles? Really? I’m not a huge fan but they were not only important in a historical sense but good.

    How about underrated?

    Eric:
I’ve always somehow managed to avoid The Grateful Dead. I don’t think I even know one song by them.

As far as The Beatles go, I know they were pretty important historically, but it’s kind of ridiculous the hype they get. I don’t think they were even the only band doing that style at the time, they just got the biggest.

An underrated list is a good idea, but it would be so hard to narrow it down. I’ll work on it. Thanks for the suggestion!

  8. Jon says:

Completely agree with Led Zeppelin, thinking they can release essentially the same album over and over again just with a different name…

    The Beatles, though? I’m upset!

  9. Housewives? says:

Jon: If it’s of any comfort, I’d rather listen to the Beatles any day over Led Zeppelin.

Beatles at least had some catchy tunes. Zeppelin had uhh… err.. Dyer Maker.

Thanks for reminding me why I always skip over your blog. What a mindless post. Get a diverse palate for music already.

  11. Housewives? says:

Well thanks for stopping by this time Ryan :)

I hardly think naming 5 bands that I believe are overrated suddenly makes our palate non-diverse. Perhaps you missed some of our non-punk/ska/hardcore/indie postings.

Here you go friend, and that’s just a few!

whats so great about Led Zeppelin?! maybe the fact that Jimmy Page is the most versitile guitarist ever. just one album would include blues, hard rock, folk, reggea, etc… His solos are absolutely amazing! John Paul Jones and John Bonham created a wall that just exploded in your face! Robert Plant could write songs about Lord of the Rings, love, broken hearts etc… They also paved the way for every hard rock band after Them. Whats so great about Led Zeppelin is that They created a sound that was unheard of in Their time and They created that into a whole new genre.
