Sonic Boom Six – The Ruff Guide To Genre Terrorism

What do you get when you mix KRS-One, Tsunami Bomb, Selector, and Voodoo Glow Skulls? Pencil’s down. The answer would be Sonic Boom Six’s “The Ruff Guide To Genre Terrorism”.

Mixing ragga, dub, ska, punk, and hip hop, Sonic Boom Six successfully create the ultimate party music. The lyrics are political, and the vocals mix between the smooth female fronted signing to straight up rapping (not to mention the generous sprinkling of good old fashion punk sing-alongs as well).

If you have a chance to check them out live, do so, it’s a fun show.

The Adolescents – For Fans of Black Flag

For the life of me, once I hear the song Amoeba, I can’t get it out of my head for DAYS. Heck, I even bring it into everyone else’s head through my constant singing of this early classic. Even if you’ve never heard it before, it’s probably in your head right NOW!

The Adolescents date back from 1980, and were a super-group composed of members of both Social Distortion and Agent Orange (dirty secret: I don’t like Social Distortion There goes like 49 scene points.) Playing old school punk/hardcore in the veins of Black Flag, The Adolescents may have not had the fame of Black Flag, but definitely influenced punk and hardcore just as much.

Mates of State Video- Get Better

Mates of State – “Get Better”

The Mates of States just posted a new video for Get Better. Like everything Mates of State it’s weird and cute… in a weird way. Plus for some reason I love the sentiment of that chorus “Everything’s gonna get lighter, even if it never gets better” For some reason it reminds me of my favorite Mountain Goats lyric “Maybe everything that falls down eventually rises.”

Arrah and the Ferns Kaput

I’m a little late on this one I know but bear with me as I work through my grief.

Word from the Arrah and the Ferns Myspace is the band is coming to an end. The release of their new album has been postponed indefinitely and their last show will be in Muncie Indiana on May 3rd (anyone up for a roadtrip?)

Dry your eyes it’s not all bad news. Carl, Joey and Arrah along with some non-ferns are planning to relocate to Philly and focus on the side-project Woodlands. I like what I hear on the Woodlands Myspace (especially check out Slim 5) so I suppose all’s not lost.

Built to Spill- The Normal Years

I’ve mentioned before how much I love Built to Spill. Lately I’ve been listening to their 1996 compilation The Normal Years. The songs are a collection of singles, live songs and previously unreleased recordings. Some of them are a little rough but I would say even for non-hardcore Built to Spill fans it’s a fun listen.

Running

So I joined my work’s running team. I’m a little worried since I think they’re much more hardcore than me. My approach to running is… well lets call it slackadaisical…

In any case here are a few of my favorite songs to run to:

MP3: Tapes n’ Tapes- Cowbell
MP3: Animal Collective- The Purple Bottle
MP3: Leftover Crack- Gang Control
